The 65th Indiana Beef Evaluation Program (IBEP) Sale will be held Thursday, April 15 at 6:00 pm at the Springville Feeder Auction, Springville, Indiana. There will be 116 bulls in the sale - 83 Angus, 2 Charolais, 4 Hereford, 7 Red Angus, 13 Simmental, and 7 SimAngus. Detailed information about the bulls will be available on the IBEP web site, http://www.ansc.purdue.edu/ibep/.
There were 211 bulls in the 2009 Winter Test, consigned by 77 cooperators from Indiana, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Breeds include Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Lim-Flex, Red Angus, Simmental, and SimAngus.
Bulls are fed a moderate energy diet, consisting of corn silage, corn grain, DDGS, and balancer. This allows them to express their genetic potential for growth, yet not put on excess condition.
Bulls are evaluated for growth rate, breeding soundness, carcass merit, structural soundness, and disposition, and frame size is recorded on each bull. The performance index is a combination of the bull's daily gain during the 125-day test and his weight per day of age. Carcass merit is evaluated using ultrasound measurements taken by a CUP certified technician. EPDs are provided on all bulls.
The IBEP test is conducted at the Feldun-Purdue Agricultural Center in Bedford, Indiana. Our facilities are practical - outside, mounded lots with open-front sheds and fence-line bunks, TMR feed delivery - all very comparable to the management and environment many of the future progeny of these bulls will be in.
IBEP conducts two tests per year: a Winter Test for bulls born January 1 through April 30, and a Summer Test for bulls born May 1 through October 31 of the previous year. |
